Visit a hospital
Door: Redactie Zorgkiezer - Leestijd: 3 minutenCan I go to any hospital?
Depending on your health insurance you are free to choose the hospital and specialist you prefer to visit. This policy is called the ‘’restitutie’’ insurance. There is also a policy that only reimburses medical costs if you visit a hospital which is contracted by the insurance company. This is called the ‘’natura’’ insurance. The restitutie and natura policy are part of the basic health insurance.
In case of emergency, you can always go to the nearest hospital. In that situation, it does not matter whether you have a natura or restitutive insurance. In case of emergency, the costs will be reimbursed by the insurance company. This also applies to an ambulance transfer to a hospital.
I am not insured, can I go to a hospital?
Even if you do not have an insurance you can go to any hospital for emergency care. The hospital is not allowed to refuse to give you the care you need. If you are not insured yet, you have to pay the bill yourself. In theory, this does not have to be the case because you have to apply for a health insurance as soon as you registered in the Netherlands. However, it might appear that you did not yet receive your insurance number. In that case, you might have to pay the costs yourself. The costs will later be reimbursed by the insurance company.
